La filiation établie entre l’Armée française d’Afrique et l’exercitus Africae romain est désormais bien connue ; on en examine ici un aspect particulier : les troupes auxiliaires ont-elles été l’objet d’un transfert similaire ? Plusieurs raisons expliquent que le lien entre supplétifs et auxilia ne fut jamais établi : les similitudes techniques et réglementaires relient la Légion étrangère aux auxilia et non à la legio ; l’attention exclusive portée à la légion, unité romaine par excellence aux yeux des Français, qui ignoraient alors l’importance numérique et tactique des auxilia ; les conditions de recrutement et d’emploi tout à fait différentes des supplétifs et des auxilia.

The link between the French colonial army in North Africa and the Roman exercitus Africae has often been drawn. This article explores whether the same connection can be established between the Roman auxiliaries and the 19th-century auxiliaries from Northern Africa. The relationship has never been drawn for several reasons: the comparison is less easy as the French Legion bears technical and statutory similarities with the auxilia but not with the Roman legio. Most scholarly attention has focused on the legio, the outstanding Roman military unit in French eyes, ignoring the tactical and numerical significance of the Roman auxilia. Lastly the conditions of recruitment and employment for auxilia and auxiliaries were entirely different.

العلاقة المحدثة بين الجيش الفرنسي بإفريقيا والجيش الروماني بإفريقيا أصبحت معروفة جيدا وسندرس هنا مظهرا خاصا منها فهل أن القوات المساعدة خضعت إلى تحول مماثل؟يمكن تفسير غياب ترابط بينالجنود الإضافيين والجنود المساعدين من خلال عدة أسباب منها نقاط التشابه التقنية والتنظيمية التي تربط الفيلق الأجنبي بالجنود المساعدين وليس بالجيش. ثمالإهتمام الخاص الذي حضي به الفيلق بصفته وحدة رومانية بحتة من وجهة نظر الفرنسيين الذين كانوا يجهلون الأهمية العددية والتكتيكية للعناصر المساعدة وأخيراشروط الإنتداب والتشغيل بالنسبة للجنود الإضافيين والجنود المساعدين.
