La crypte de l’abbaye Saint-Séverin à Château-Landon (Seine-et-Marne) : analyse architecturale d’un édifice de l’an Mil

En 1995, en raison d’un projet d’aménagement, une fouille de sauvetage a été programmée sur le site de l’ancienne abbaye Saint-Séverin à Château-Landon, dont les vestiges des cryptes n’étaient alors connus que de rares spécialistes et d’érudits locaux. Une première analyse archéologique démontra rapidement le grand intérêt de cet édifice qui s’ajoutait au corpus monumental des environs de l’an Mil dans cette région, corpus jusqu’alors peu étoffé. L’état très dégradé des maçonneries permit d’accéder au cœur des matériaux utilisés. Grâce à l’intervention des spécialistes concernés, les résultats de cette démarche se conformaient ainsi à l’indispensable pluridisciplinarité requise pour aborder les vestiges bâtis. La conclusion de ce travail éclaire d’un jour nouveau l’inclusion des remplois au sein de l’édifice, pratique qui, au-delà des faits matériels, révèle le poids symbolique attaché aux matériaux constituant l’enceinte sacrée de cette crypte.

In 1995, prior to a building project, a rescue excavation was programmed on the Saint-Séverin Abbey site in Château-Landon, the crypt of which was hitherto known to only a few specialists and local scholars. The first archaeological assessment has shown the importance of this edifice, adding elements to the rather sparse corpus of monumental architecture in the environs at the beginning of the second millennium. Due to the degraded state of the masonry, the construction materials used have been widely documented by specialists. These results highlight the interdisciplinary approach essential to archaeological standing building studies. This work throws new light on the re-use of materials within the edifice which, beyond statement of fact, reveals the symbolic value of the materials forming the sacred enclosure of the crypt.

1995 veranlasste ein Nutzungsprojekt eine Notgrabung auf dem Gelände der früheren Abtei St. Severin in Château-Landon (zwischen Fontainebleau und Montargis). Damals wußten nur wenige Fachleute und Heimatforscher um die Reste ihrer Krypta. Erste Bauuntersuchungen zeigten bald ihre große Bedeutung, denn sie gehört zu den in dieser Region recht dünn besäten Bauten der Jahrtausendwende. Ihr Mauerwerk war so beschädigt, daß es möglich wurde, zu den verwendeten Baumaterialien vorzudringen. Dazu wurden verschiedene Fachleute herangezogen, und somit der in der Bauforschung nötigen Interdisziplinarität Genüge getan. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit werfen ein neues Licht auf die Wiederverwendung von Spolien in diesem Bau, die nicht nur praktische Gründe hat, sondern mit dem symbolischen Gewicht der Baumaterialen zu tun hat, aus denen dieser Sakralbau besteht.
