Ma Huan’s Yingya shenglan (now YYSL) is a key source for the history of maritime Southeast Asia and some of the countries and ports along the northern sections of the Indian Ocean. European historians are familiar with this book through the detailed studies by Paul Pelliot, J.J.L. Duyvendak and the full English version by J.V.G. Mills.
