El asunto Audinot en la prensa absolutista: tergiversación de la información y manipulación de la opinión pública a principios del siglo XIX

L'affaire Audinot est une fausse conspiration républicaine, probablement inventée par la faction absolutiste pour attaquer la Régence, diffamer d'éminents politiciens libéraux et prouver l'ancienne hypothèse absolutiste qui défendait l'alliance entre Napoléon et les libéraux espagnols. Cet article montre comment la presse réactionnaire a diffusé et utilisé entre février et avril 1814 l'information judiciaire de l'affaire à des fins politiques, en donnant pour vrai le témoignage d'un aventurier, en déformant l'information, en inventant des nouvelles pour renforcer la crédibilité du complot présumé et en exaltant l'opinion publique par la surestimation de la question, qui a même fait l'objet de discussions au Parlement espagnol.

El caso Audinot fue una falsa conspiración republicana seguramente inventada por la facción absolutista para atacar a la Regencia, difamar a destacados políticos liberales y probar la vieja asunción servil que defendía la filiación napoleónica del liberalismo español. El presente trabajo muestra cómo la prensa reaccionaria difundió y utilizó entre febrero y abril de 1814 la información judicial del caso con fines políticos, dando veracidad al testimonio de un aventurero, tergiversando la información, inventando noticias para reforzar la credibilidad del supuesto complot y exaltando a la opinión pública a través de la magnificación del asunto, cuya trascendencia llegó a ser tal que fue ampliamente debatido en las cortes.

The Audinot case was a false Republican conspiracy, probably invented by the absolutist faction to attack the Regency, defame prominent Liberal politicians and prove the old absolutist assumption that defended the alliance between Napoleon and the Spanish Liberals. The present article shows how the reactionary press diffused and used between February and April 1814 the judicial information of the case for political purposes, by giving veracity to the testimony of an adventurer, distorting the information, inventing news to strengthen the credibility of the pretended plot and exalting public opinion through the overstatement of the issue, the significance of which became such that it was widely debated in the Spanish Parliament.
