« Archaïscher Torso Apollos » (Torse archaïque d’Apollon) : un poème intraduisible ?

À partir de l’étude du poème « Archaïscher Torso Apollos », cette contribution propose une réflexion sur la langue poétique de Rilke, sur sa stratification étymologique et sémantique, ainsi qu’une réflexion sur la possibilité ou l’impossibilité de la traduire. En s’appuyant sur les termes Bug et Sturz, plus énigmatiques et riches qu’il n’y paraît au premier abord, l’article revient sur les choix opérés par six traducteurs francophones différents, et montre comment traduction et interprétation s’interpénètrent. Une traduction raisonnée de ces deux termes fait en effet ressortir avec netteté une vision de l’œuvre d’art plastique qui va dans le sens d’une poétique de la surface, conforme à la vision rilkéenne. Une dernière traduction du poème, qui tient compte des éléments sémantiques ici dégagés, vient clore le propos.

Von einer lexikalischen und syntaktischen Interpretation des Gedichtes „Archaïscher Torso Apollos“ ausgehend bietet der vorliegende Beitrag eine Reflexion über Rilkes poetische Sprache, über ihre etymologische und semantische Verschichtung, sowie über die (Un)möglichkeit des Übersetzens von Lyrik an. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit wird dabei zwei zentralen Termini geschenkt, und zwar den Wörtern „Bug“ und „Sturz“, die viel komplexer (und für die Interpretation viel ergiebiger) sind, als man gewöhnlich meint. Sechs französische Übertragungen des Gedichtes werden unter die Lupe genommen, sodass die Verquickung von Übersetzung und Interpretation vollends zur Geltung kommt. Eine relevante Übersetzung der beiden Termini „Bug“ und „Sturz“, die ihrem semantischen und etymologischen Reichtum gerecht wird, ermöglicht nämlich eine Interpretation des Gedichtes (und des plastischen Kunstwerkes), die in die Richtung einer typisch Rilkeschen Poetik der Oberfläche geht. Abschliessend wird eine Übertragung des Gedichtes vorgeschlagen, die sich auf die hier herausgearbeiteten Elemente stützt.

Based on the study of the poem “Archaischer Torso Apollos”, this paper proposes a reflection on Rilke’s poetic language, on its etymological and semantic stratification, as well as a reflection on the possibility or impossibility of translating this poetic language. Based on the terms Bug and Sturz, which are more enigmatic and rich than they seem at first glance, the article looks at the choices made by six different French-speaking translators, and shows how translation and interpretation are intertwined. A reasoned translation of these two terms brings out clearly a vision of the plastic work of art that is in line with the poetics of the surface, in conformity with the Rilkean vision. A final translation of the poem, which takes into account the semantic elements identified here, concludes the paper.
