En dehors des frontons du temple, patiemment reconstitués par Francis Croissant, l’image d’Apollon à Delphes au ive siècle est restée jusqu’à présent largement méconnue. Nous proposons, à la suite d’un réexamen des figures centrales de ces frontons, de les redistribuer et les réinterpréter. L’interversion, qui en résulte, des représentations d’Apollon et de Dionysos s’explique, selon nous, par un programme général qui concerne également la figure d’acrotère central du fronton est. Dans cette nouvelle proposition, nous incluons une statue monumentale d’Apollon, qui se trouvait selon nous sur la grande base de l’opisthodome. L’observation de la pierre interprétée comme un omphalos et récemment replacée au sommet de la colonne d’acanthe nous conduit à y reconnaître une représentation non figurative du dieu, rappelant les Agyieis connus à Cyrène et Apollonia d’Illyrie. Cette nouvelle lecture du monument nous amène à l’identifier au Sitalkas de trente‑cinq coudées connu par Pausanias. Par ailleurs, nous replaçons sur une fondation anciennement attribuée au monument d’Aristainéta une base pour deux statues, contemporaine, également, de l’achèvement du temple.

Εκτός από τα αετώµατα του ναού, που έχει αναπαραστήσει µε υποµονή ο Francis Croissant, η µορφή του Απόλλωνα των ∆ελφών κατά τον 4ο αιώνα παραµένει έως τώρα σε µεγάλο βαθµό άγνωστη. Αφού επανεξετάσαµε τις κεντρικές µορφές αυτών των αετωµάτων, προτείνουµε µια νέα τοποθέτηση και ερµηνεία. Κατά την άποψή µας, η αντιστροφή στην αναπαράσταση του Απόλλωνα και του ∆ιόνυσου εξηγείται από ένα γενικότερο πρόγραµµα που αφορά επίσης τη µορφή του κεντρικού ακρωτηρίου στο ανατολικό αέτωµα. Η νέα µας πρόταση περιλαµβάνει ένα µνηµειώδες άγαλµα του Απόλλωνα, που κατά την άποψή µας βρισκόταν στη µεγάλη βάση του οπισθόδοµου. Η παρατήρηση του λίθου που ερµηνεύεται ως οµφαλός και που πρόσφατα επανατοποθετήθηκε στην κορυφή του κίονα µε τα φύλλα ακάνθου µας οδηγεί σε µια ανεικονική αναπαράσταση του θεού, που µας θυµίζει τους Αγυείς που ήταν γνωστοί στην Κυρήνη και στην Απολλωνία της Ιλλυρίας. Αυτή η νέα ανάγνωση του µνηµείου µας οδηγεί στην ταύτιση µε τον Σιτάλκα ύψους τριανταπέντε πήχεων που είχε περιγράψει και ο Παυσανίας. Επίσης, µια βάση που παλαιότερα αποδιδόταν στο µνηµείο της Αρισταινέτας τώρα ερµηνεύεται ως βάση για δυο αγάλµατα η οποία είναι σύγχρονη µε την ολοκλήρωση του ναού.

Apart from the temple pediments, patiently reconstructed by Francis Croissant, the image of Apollo at Delphi in the 4th century has remained largely unknown until now. Following a re‑examination of the central figures of these pediments, we present a new redistribution and reinterpretation. The resulting inversion of the representations of Apollo and Dionysus can be explained, in our view, by a general programme which also concerns the central acroterion figure of the eastern pediment. In this new proposal, we include a monumental statue of Apollo, which we believe stood on the large base of the opisthodom. The observation of the stone interpreted as an omphalos and recently replaced at the top of the acanthus column leads us to recognize a non-figurative representation of the god, recalling the Agyieis known in Cyrene and Apollonia of Illyria. This new reading of the monument leads us to identify it with the Sitalkas of thirty‑five cubits known by Pausanias. In addition, we reinterpret a foundation formerly attributed to the monument of Aristaineta as a base for two statues, also contemporary with the completion of the temple.
