Les monuments érigés à Délos et à Athènes en l’honneur de Ménodôros, pancratiaste et lutteur

Les monuments de Délos et d’Athènes célébrant le pancratiaste et lutteur Ménodôros fils de Gnaios font l’objet d’une analyse conjointe, qui débute par la restitution de leurs bases et la reconstitution du groupe statuaire que portait le premier d’entre eux ; suit un nouvel établissement du texte des inscriptions (ID 1957 et 2498 à Délos, Agora XVIII, C196 / IG II/III3, 4.1, 599, à Athènes), doublé d’une étude des couronnes composant le palmarès de l’athlète. Les données prosopographiques amènent à dater les deux monuments des années 120‑110 et à les situer à l’intersection des chronologies attique et rhodienne. On examine ensuite leur position dans l’histoire du mouvement agonistique et leur environnement topographique. Ces diverses approches aboutissent à des résultats cohérents sur les plans historique et archéologique.

Τα µνηµεία στη Δήλο και στην Αθήνα, που µνηµονεύουν τον παγκρατιαστή και πυγµάχο Μηνόδωρο, γιο του Γναίου αποτελούν αντικείµενο ταυτόχρονης ανάλυσης, που ξεκινά µε την αποκατάσταση των βάσεών τους και την αναπαράσταση των αγαλµάτων που έφερε το µνηµείο της Δήλου. Ακολουθεί µια νέα αποκατάσταση του κειµένου των επιγραφών (ID 1957 και 2498 στη Δήλο, Agora XVIII, C196 / IG II/III3, 4.1, 599, στην Αθήνα), και µια µελέτη των στεφανιών, τροπαίων του αθλητή. Τα προσωπογραφικά δεδοµένα συνηγορούν στη χρονολόγηση των δύο µνηµείων στα χρόνια γύρω στο 120‑110 και τα τοποθετούν στο σηµείο τοµής της αττικής και της ροδιακής χρονολόγησης. Εξετάζουµε στη συνέχεια τη θέση τους στην ιστορία του αθλητικού κινήµατος και το τοπογραφικό περιβάλλον τους. Οι διάφορες αυτές προσεγγίσεις καταλήγουν σε οµοιογενή αποτελέσµατα σε ιστορικό και αρχαιολογικό επίπεδο.

The monuments on Delos and in Athens celebrating the pancratiast and wrestler Menodoros son of Gnaios are analysed together, beginning with a reconstruction of their bases and of the statue‑group that stood on the Delian monument ; there follows a revised version of the text of the inscriptions (ID 1957 and 2498 at Delos, Agora XVIII, C196 / IG II/III3, 4.1, 599, at Athens), combined with a study of the wreaths which constitute the athlete’s record of victories. Prosopographical considerations favour dating the two monuments to the decade 120‑110, and the Athenian monument then confirms the dating to that period, obtained by separate criteria, of Attic and Rhodian inscriptions. Finally, the place of the monuments in the history of athletic contests and their topographical surroundings is discussed. These varied approaches result in conclusions which are historically and archaeologically consistent.
