L’histoire des collections du Musée impérial, aujourd’hui Musée archéologique d’Istanbul, est extrêmement lacunaire pour ce qui est des premières décennies de son existence. Il est possible toutefois de combler ces lacunes ou de corriger de nombreuses erreurs en ayant recours de manière systématique à une documentation contemporaine restée inexploitée jusqu’ici. C’est notamment le cas d’une célèbre statue d’Artémis, cataloguée comme provenant de Lesbos vers 1865, mais dont nous pouvons désormais dire avec certitude qu’elle fut découverte en 1844 au lieu‑dit des « Bains de Diane » (Halkapınar) dans les environs de Smyrne. Cette enquête devient aussi l’occasion de retracer la « biographie » de cet objet, longuement étudié et admiré par Salomon Reinach, et de proposer une relecture des interprétations et commentaires dont il fut l’objet.

Και αν η Άρτεμις δεν ήταν από τη Λέσβο; Κριτική βιογραφία ενός αγάλματος (αγαλματιδίου) της Άρτεμης του Αρχαιολογικού Μουσείου της Κωνσταντινούπολης.Η ιστορία των συλλογών του αυτοκρατορικού Μουσείου, που ονομάζεται σήμερα Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο της Κωνσταντινούπολης, είναι εξαιρετικά αποσπασματική σε ό,τι αφορά στις πρώτες δεκαετίας της ύπαρξής του. Είναι όμως δυνατόν να συμπληρώσουμε τα κενά αυτά ή να διορθώσουμε πολλά λάθη καταφεύγοντας συστηματικά σε σύγχρονες πηγές, που είχαν μείνει αναξιοποίητες έως σήμερα. Αυτό συμβαίνει και για ένα διάσημο άγαλμα της Άρτεμης, για το οποίο αναφέρεται στον κατάλογο του μουσείου ότι βρέθηκε στη Λέσβο γύρω στο 1865. Μπορούμε όμως πλέον να πούμε με βεβαιότητα ότι ανακαλύφθηκε το 1844 στη θέση « Λουτρά της Άρτεμης » (Halkapınar) στα περίχωρα της Σμύρνης. Η έρευνα αυτή μας δίνει την ευκαιρία να ξαναγράψουμε τη «βιογραφία» αυτού του αντικειμένου, που είχε μελετήσει και θαυμάσει πολύ ο Salomon Reinach, και να προτείνουμε μια νέα ανάγνωση των ερμηνειών και των σχολίων που το αφορούν.

What if Diana was not Lesbian? A critical biography of a statue(tte) of Artemis at the Archaeological Museum of Istanbul.The history of the collections of the Imperial Museum, today the Istanbul Archaeological Museum, during the first decades of its existence is riddled with lacunae and inconsistencies. Nevertheless, we can try to fill these gaps and to correct errors in the existing scholarship by systematically using contemporary documentation, much neglected to this day. A well‑known statue of Artemis serves as an instructive case study. Although it has been identified as having been found on Lesbos about 1865, we can now demonstrate that it was discovered in 1844 at the so‑called “Baths of Diana” (Halkapınar), near Smyrna. Our investigation also provides a “biography” of this artifact, which was much admired and studied by Salomon Reinach, and it discusses the comments and interpretations, which it elicited from him and other contemporary specialists.
