Missions topographiques à Latô II (2005-2007) : étude de morphologie urbaine

Implantée dans le massif du Mirambello, sur un site stratégique de moyenne montagne et au point de passage entre la Crète centrale et la Crète orientale, la ville de Latô se caractérise à la fois par un profil géomorphologique remarquable et par une exceptionnelle qualité de conservation. Trois campagnes de prospection et de relevés, effectuées entre 2005 et 2007, ont permis de dégager les spécificités de sa morphologie urbaine, les schémas récurrents d’implantation du bâti, l’organisation de son système de défense, les modalités de circulation au sein de la ville et son articulation avec le territoire. L’ensemble de ces caractéristiques permet d’entrevoir le rôle central et planificateur de la cité, qui a su tirer le meilleur parti de conditions topographiques exigeantes pour doter Latô d’une organisation efficace et homogène.

Η πόλη της Λατούς βρίσκεται στο µέσον του ορεινού όγκου του Μιραµπέλλου, σε µια στρατηγική θέση στο βουνό, στο πέρασµα από την κεντρική προς την ανατολική Κρήτη. Η Λατώ διακρίνεται για την ιδιαίτερη γεωµορφολογία της περιοχής και για την εξαιρετική κατάσταση διατήρησής της. Οι τρεις περίοδοι τοπογραφικής έρευνας και έρευνας γεωµορφολογικού αναγλύφου κατά τη διάρκεια των ετών 2005 έως 2007 επέτρεψαν να αποσαφηνιστεί η αστική µορφολογία, τα επαναλαµβανόµενα σχήµατα ίδρυσης κτηρίων, η οργάνωση του συστήµατος άµυνας, οι όροι κυκλοφορίας στην πόλη, καθώς και η διάρθρωσή της σε σχέση µε την περιοχή που την περιβάλλει. Το σύνολο αυτών των χαρακτηριστικών επιτρέπει να διακρίνει κανείς τον κεντρικό και οργανωτικό ρόλο της πόλης, η οποία γνώριζε πώς να αποκοµίσει το καλύτερο από τις υπάρχουσες τοπογραφικές συνθήκες, προκειµένου να αποκτήσει η Λατώ µια αποτελεσµατική και οµοιογενή οργάνωση.

Situated on the Mirabello massif, on a strategic mid-mountain site at the passage between central and eastern Crete, the village of Lato is characterised both by a remarkable geomorphological profile and by an excellent state of preservation. Three campaigns of prospection and study of its geomorphological contours, carried out between 2005 and 2007, made it possible to identify the specificities of its urban morphology, the recurrent patterns of building sites, the organisation of its defensive system, the modes of circulation within the village, and its articulation in regards to its territory. Taken together, these characteristics allow for an understanding of the central and organisational role of the city, which knew how to make the most of its demanding topographical conditions to provide Lato with an efficient and homogeneous organisation.
