Comprehending farmers’ values in peri-urbanised Ağlasun, Burdur, Turkey: The case study of rose (Rosa x damascena) cultivation

This paper illustrates the impact of peri-urbanisation on farmers’ values using the case study of rose cultivation in Ağlasun, Burdur, Turkey. Ağlasun is a village in south-western Turkey that has been undergoing social change with regards to peri-urbanisation. Within the scope of rose farming, the privatisation and globalisation of cultivation and the industry, alongside the rural gentrification of the village are assumed to have a significant impact on how farmers experience certain values: emotional connection to cultivation, family’s tradition of farming, and willingness to continue farming, as identified in the scope of this study. In order to investigate this connection between peri-urbanisation and farmers’ values that has not been well reported in the literature, this research adopts a qualitative methodology including interviews conducted with the rose farmers in Ağlasun in 2022. For this research, the following analyses are aimed; analysing the current status of farmers’ emotional connection to rose cultivation, family tradition of farming, and willingness to continue farming roses beyond 2022; and the relationship between such farmers’ values and the social change being brought about by peri-urbanisation in the village. The research findings suggest that emotional connection to cultivation and the farmers’ family tradition of farming are prevailing norms within the study group. A sizeable portion of the farmers are unwilling to continue farming due to the challenges linked to the peri-urbanisation of the village, whereas some are willing to continue, being motivated by emotional means. Ultimately, farmers’ emotional connection to cultivation, family tradition of farming, and willingness to continue farming roses are now being experienced differently due to the ongoing peri-urbanisation in the village.

Cet article illustre l’incidence de la périurbanisation sur les valeurs des agriculteurs à travers une étude de cas sur la culture de la rose à Ağlasun, Burdur, en Turquie. Ağlasun est un village du sud-ouest de la Turquie qui connaît des changements sociaux dans un contexte de périurbanisation. La privatisation et la mondialisation de l’agriculture et de l’industrie, parallèlement à la gentrification rurale du village, semblent avoir un impact significatif sur la manière dont les agriculteurs vivent certaines valeurs: lien émotionnel avec la culture, tradition agricole de la famille et volonté de poursuivre l’agriculture. Afin d’étudier ce lien entre la périurbanisation et les valeurs des agriculteurs qui n’ont pas été correctement rapportées dans la littérature, le présent article adopte une méthodologie qualitative comprenant des entretiens avec les agriculteurs de roses à Ağlasun en 2022. Pour cette recherche, les analyses suivantes visent à établir un état des lieux : du lien émotionnel des agriculteurs avec la culture de roses, de la tradition agricole familiale et de la volonté de poursuivre la culture de roses au-delà de 2022, ainsi que de la relation entre les valeurs de ces agriculteurs et les changements sociaux induits par la périurbanisation du village. Les résultats de la recherche suggèrent que les liens émotionnels avec l’agriculture et la tradition agricole familiale des agriculteurs sont des normes dominantes au sein du groupe d’étude. Une grande partie des agriculteurs sont réticents à poursuivre leur activité agricole en raison des défis liés à la périurbanisation du village, tandis que certains sont toujours disposés à poursuivre leur activité pour des motifs émotionnels. En conclusion, le lien émotionnel des agriculteurs avec la culture, la tradition agricole familiale et la volonté de poursuivre la culture de roses sont aujourd’hui ressentis différemment en raison de la périurbanisation actuelle du village.

Bu araştırma, Ağlasun, Burdur, Türkiye'deki gül yetiştiriciliğini inceleyerek çeper kentleşmenin çiftçi değerleri üzerindeki etkisini göstermeyi amaçlamaktadır. Ağlasun, Türkiye'nin güneybatısında yer alan, çeper kentleşme bağlamında sosyal değişim geçirmekte olan bir köydür. Gül yetiştiriciliği kapsamında, ekim ve endüstriyel süreçlerinin özelleştirilmesi ve küreselleştirilmesinin yanı sıra köyün kırsal soylulaştırılmasının, çiftçilerin belirli değerleri nasıl deneyimledikleri üzerinde önemli bir etkiye sahip olduğu ön görülmektedir. Bu araştırma çerçevesinde bu değerler; çiftçilerin ekimle kurduğu duygusal bağ, aile çiftçilik geleneği ve ekime devam etme istekliliği olarak tanımlanmıştır. Literatürde yeterince yer edinmemiş olan çeper kentleşme ile çiftçi değerleri arasındaki bu bağlantıyı inceleyen bu araştırma, Ağlasun'daki gül çiftçileriyle 2022 yılında yapılan görüşmeleri içeren nitel bir metodoloji benimsemiştir. Bu araştırmada, çiftçilerin gül yetiştiriciliğine yönelik duygusal bağları, aile çiftçilik geleneği ve 2022'den sonrasında gül yetiştirmeye devam etme istekliliği değerlerinin; ve bu değerler ile çeper kentleşmenin getirdiği sosyal değişim arasındaki ilişkinin analiz edilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırma bulguları, ekimle duygusal bağın ve çiftçilerin aile çiftçilik geleneğinin, çalışma grubu içinde hakim normlar olduğunu göstermektedir. Çiftçilerin büyük bir kısmı, çeper kentleşmesinden kaynaklanan zorluklar nedeniyle gül ekimine devam etmeye isteksizken, bazıları duygusal nedenlerle motive olarak devam etmeye isteklidirler. Sonuç olarak, çiftçilerin ekimle olan duygusal bağı, aile çiftçilik geleneği ve gül yetiştirmeye devam etme isteği, Ağlasun’daki çeper kentleşme nedeniyle artık farklı şekilde deneyimlenmektedir.
