The beginnings of Christianity in Iraq are difficult to establish due to the lack of sources from before the 3rd century. According to Oriental traditions, the provinces of Assyria and Babylonia were evangelized in the 1st and early 2nd centuries by the apostles Addaï and Mari, and Mesopotamia by both of them, together with Thomas.
