En prenant comme source le journal d’Aḥmad Ibn Ṭawq (834-915/1443-1510), un notaire et clerc damascène, cet article a pour but d’aborder la question de la vie quotidienne et de s’interroger sur la façon dont les habitants eux-mêmes percevaient la ville à la fin de l’époque mamelouke.

Medieval Damascus is one of the most studied cities of the Islamic Middle East, both from a sociological, an administrative and an architectural point of view. Yet how did the inhabitants themselves perceive their city? Based on the journal of the notary and court clerk Aḥmad Ibn Ṭawq (834-915/1443-1510), this article explores the realm of everyday life in Mamluk Damascus. The leading questions are: Did Ibn Ṭawq perceive his hometown as an entity different from its hinterland? And how does he describe localities within the city?
