Vladimir Nabokov’s theory of translation has long validated the scholarly image of Nabokov as modernist aesthete. That is, his belief in the “untranslatability” of literary works foregrounds a “mystical submission to aesthetic authority” (McGurl 2011: 5). This article reframes our reading of Nabokov’s prioritization of aesthetics in light of his technical, scientific, and, as I will show, even mathematical conceptualization of linguistic properties.
