Dans cette intervention, il sera question de réfléchir sur les premières manifestations matérielles élaborées par les pouvoirs communaux à travers quelques exemples de villes de Provence occidentale. En observant les choix symboliques et les transformations des outils et des biens utilisés pour s’affirmer en tant qu’institutions indépendantes, nous mettrons en valeur l’évolution des gouvernements communaux vers une autonomie de plus en plus aboutie, de la période consulaire jusqu’à l’affirmation des podestats. Nous nous interrogerons, tout particulièrement, sur l’appropriation de la part des gouvernements urbains des attributs propres du pouvoir de matrice publique : sceaux, bulles et livres, fortifications et constructions monumentales, maisons et palais communaux.

In this paper we will be considering the first material manifestations drawn up by the powers in a commune by examining a few examples of towns in western Provence. By studying the symbolic choices and the changes made in the instruments and the goods used to affirm themselves as independent institutions, we shall be highlighting the evolution of communal governments towards an increasingly assured autonomy, from the consular period up until the affirmation of the podestats, or chief magistrates. In particular we shall be questioning the appropriation by urban governments of the attributes proper to the power of the public matrice: seals, bulls and books, fortifications and monumental constructions, communal houses and palaces.
