This text has been originally presented in French and has been translated into English with the help of S. Randall. The part of Thucydides’ work dealing with the “Pentekontaetia”, or the period stretching from the defeat of the Persian invasion of Greece in 479 to the beginning of hostilities between Athens and Sparta in 431, is one of those that have elicited the most commentaries. Herodotus’ Histories end with 479, and the Pentekontaetia (l. 89.1-1.118.1) fills the gap between 479 and 431. ...
