By the middle of the second century BC, after the Romans had ended the Rhodians’control of Karia and Lykia in 167 BC as punishment for their audacious offer to broker a peace between the Romans and Perseus, king of Makedon, Mylasa had become the pre-eminent polis of south-central Karia.
