The topographical issues discussed in this article are a result of the discovery of about 800 ostraka, mainly Greek, during the excavations by the University of Southampton at Qusayr al-Qadim/Myos Hormos (1999-2003). There are few toponyms, but there is one that is relatively well represented: Philoteris, which spontaneously evokes a port on the Red Sea known by the ancient geographers as Philotera, the name of a Ptolemaic foundation, whose exact location is not certain.
