O iniciar do século XX, ocorreu a mudança progressiva da paisagem urbana das freguesias de S. Martinho de Bougado e Santiago que constituiriam o território da futura cidade da Trofa. Duas freguesias de cariz claramente rural que com a inauguração da Linha do Minho em 1875 e a melhoria da estrada nacional Porto – Braga, ficando servidas de excelentes vias de comunicação, assistiram ao aumento continuo de população e respetivamente de indústrias que rapidamente ultrapassaram as várias dezenas como também o seu leque de produção era variado. Não deve ser descurada a principal relevância para a industrial têxtil e de metalomecânica. Uma cidade profundamente marcada pelo progresso com marcas que ultrapassam várias décadas sobrevivendo ainda registos no seu casco urbano de um passado industrial que em breve irá sofrer obras de reabilitação. A presente comunicação pretende traçar uma panorâmica dessa industrialização ao longo das várias décadas do séc. XX, destacar a edificação industrial existente que resistiu até ao presente. Trofa e indústria sempre foram palavras sinónimas, sendo o recém concelho um importante território para o estudo da história da industrialização do país.

The beginning of the twentieth century was the gradual change in the urban landscape of the parishes of S. Martinho de Bougado and Santiago that would constitute the territory of the future city of Trofa. Two clearly rural parishes which, with the inauguration of the Minho Line in 1875 and the improvement of the Porto - Braga national road, were served with excellent communication routes, witnessed the continuous increase of population and, respectively, of industries that rapidly surpassed the several tens but his range of production varied. The main relevance for the textile and metal-mechanical industry should not be neglected. A city deeply marked by progress with marks that go beyond several decades still surviving records in its urban hull of an industrial past that soon will undergo rehabilitation works. This Communication intends to give an overview of this industrialization throughout the several decades of the century. XX, to highlight the existing industrial building that has survived to the present. Trofa and Industry were always synonymous words, being the new county an important territory for the study of the history of the industrialization of the country.
