La figura dell’architetto lusitano Emanuele Rodriguez Dos Santos, attivo a Roma dal 1721 e coinvolto in numerose opere per conto della corona portoghese nella città eterna (suo primo committente fu l’ambasciatore José Maria de Fonseca Evora), è stato oggetto di episodici studi. La maggior parte di questi sono incentrati soprattutto sulla sua opera architettonica, sull’apparato effimero da lui disegnato per la pompa funebre di Giovanni V di Portogallo nella chiesa di Sant’Antonio dei Portoghesi (1751) e sulla famosa disputa giudiziaria con i Padri Trinitari Scalzi. Questo scritto vuole analizzare la personalità, il gusto e la socialità del Dos Santos nella Roma della metà del Settecento, tramite lo studio dell’inventario postumo dell’architetto. Il corposo documento, ricco elenco di dipinti, argenti e oggetti da lavoro, può far luce sull’ancora poco nota figura dell’architetto portoghese. Nonostante siano già noti da altre ricerche la data di morte (22 marzo 1764), il testamento e l’inventario del Dos Santos, questi ultimi non sono stati mai trascritti né esaminati approfonditamente. Disegnatore di apparati effimeri, progettista, collezionista di opere d’arte, il Dos Santos può essere annoverato tra i più interessanti artisti stranieri attivi a Roma per conto della corona portoghese alla metà del Settecento.

The figure of the Portuguese architect Emanuele Rodriguez Dos Santos, active in Rome since 1721 and involved in numerous works on behalf of the Portuguese crown in the Eternal City (his first patron was Ambassador Fonseca Evora), has been the subject of occasional studies. Most of these are mainly focused on his architectural work, on the ephemeral apparatus he designed for the funeral home of John V of Portugal in Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi (1751) and on the famous dispute with the Trinitarian Fathers. This work aims to analyze personality, taste and sociality of Dos Santos in Rome in the mid-eighteenth century, through the study of the posthumous inventory of the architect. The substantial document, rich list of paintings, silverware and precious fabrics, can shed light on the still little-known figure of the architect. Although other research has already revealed the date of his death (03/22/1764), the will and the inventory of Dos Santos have never been transcribed or examined in depth. A draughtsman of ephemeral apparatuses, a designer and a collector of works of art, Dos Santos can be counted among the most interesting foreign artists active in Rome on behalf of the Portuguese crown in the mid-eighteenth century.
