A biblioteca pública do futuro necessita resgatar a sua função de espaço destinado a formar leitores e levar o ser humano a desenvolver a sua capacidade crítica para atingir um crescimento social desejado. Uma sociedade cresce adequadamente se o desenvolvimento tecnológico ocorre de forma equivalente ao crescimento cultural. A ampliação das possibilidades de acesso à informação e conhecimento precisam ser monitoradas mediante uma articulação positiva entre governo e sociedade civil e por meio de ações coletivas contribuir para a democratização da leitura visando a mobilidade cidadã no País. Cabe a biblioteca pública ampliar sua capacidade e competência a favor da inclusão social, redimensionando questões relevantes, que se relacionem com o acesso e o excesso de informação para construir meios de assegurar o crescimento do conhecimento apoiando-se no uso adequado das tecnologias intelectuais. Trata-se de um artigo visando a discussão da biblioteca na sociedade atual ressaltando-se o papel do profissional da informação e a necessidade da sua mediação na biblioteca pública.
