Le livre mathématique au xixe siècle : libraires, typographes et graveurs (1810-1864)

Production et circulation des mathématiques ne sont pas que des problématiques d’ordre intellectuel mais relèvent aussi de considérations matérielles et économiques. À ce titre, différents acteurs du monde des livres (libraires, typographes et graveurs) interviennent de manière prépondérante. Nous présentons et analysons les productions de l’éditeur Bachelier qui a été l’un des plus importants éditeurs mathématiques du xixe siècle en France et en Europe. Nous nous arrêtons tout particulièrement sur le rôle du prote devenu directeur de ce libraire-imprimeur : Théodore Bailleul (1797-1875). Au-delà du cas d’étude de la maison d’édition Bachelier, nous donnons à voir toute une cartographie de l’édition des mathématiques sur le long terme entre les années 1750 et 1850.

Production and circulation of mathematics are not only an intellectual problem but a material and an economic one too. A variety of actors, such as booksellers, typographers or engravers, play an important part in producing and distributing books of mathematics. In this contribution, we focus on Bachelier, one of the most important publishing houses of mathematical texts in the nineteenth century in France and in Europe. Especially, we will study the case of Theodore Bailleul (1797-1875), the head of the Typographical Department and future director of Bachelier’s printing office. Beyond this case of study, we will give a mapping of the editorial world of mathematics between 1750 and 1850.
