This paper is about the form of exploration underlying psychiatric examination : the psychiatrist obtains information not by asking, but by telling the candidate patients something about themselves. So psychiatric interviews have a pervasive element of discretion : the act of exploration is regularly done indirectly in the format of information eliciting tellings ; the object of exploration is redescribed in these tellings in an indirect and euphemistic manner. In such a phenomenon the peculiar meaning structure of psychiatry is reproduced : psychiatry is an institution twisted between medicine and morality.
