Sappho au début du xxie siècle : genre et poésie érotique

La découverte au début du xxie siècle, en Allemagne et aux États-Unis, de plusieurs papyrus contenant des vers de Sappho (P. Köln inv. 21351 + 21376 ; P. Sapph. Obbink ; P. GC inv. 105, fr. 1-4) a profondément modifié le corpus saphique non seulement par l’apport de deux nouveaux poèmes mais aussi en raison de chevauchements complétant de nombreux fragments déjà connus. Cet article propose un bilan de ces moments papyrologiques importants et une reconsidération – que ces découvertes rendent nécessaire – de l’œuvre de la poétesse dans la perspective du genre et des rapports érotiques, croisée avec une approche pragmatique de cette poésie chantée et ritualisée. Le fr. 58 désormais quasi complet ainsi que le Chant à Cypris apportent des informations sur la caractérisation d’erôs et de ses symptômes physiques, sur le genre des protagonistes impliqués dans la relation érotique et sur la dimension “saphique” d’un monde amoureux d’“avant la sexualité”.

The discovery at the beginning of the 21th Century, in Germany and in the United States, of several papyri with lines of Sappho (P. Köln inv. 21351 + 21376; P. Sapph. Obbink; P. GC inv. 105, fr. 1-4) has increased in a remarkable way our corpus of fragments of poems by Sappho: two entirely new poems and many small fragments to be integrated in existing fragmentary texts. The present study intends to reconsider these new papyrological moments and to examine their impact on our knowledge of the work of the poetess of Lesbos under the point of view of the gender and of erotic relationships. Now the almost full text of fragment 58 and a new Cypris song bring informations on erôs and its physiological symptoms, on the gender of the protagonists of the erotic relationship and on the “Sapphic” dimension of an erotic world “before sexuality”.
