Nourrissant tantôt le mythe de la « communauté modèle », tantôt celui de la « minorité martyre », les différents groupes de migrants qui constituent la diaspora indienne négocient leur place dans leur société d’intégration, en lien étroit avec leur société d’origine. À la lumière des différentes communautés d’origine indienne établies à Maurice, cet article examine l’influence conjointe de l’Inde et des États d’installation sur la production de l’indianité et la mobilisation communautaire en diaspora. Il met également en lumière le rôle des migrants d’origine indienne dans la redéfinition d’une indianité à géométrie variable, à la fois locale et globale.

Sustaining at times the myth of “model community”, or the idea of “martyr minority”, different groups of migrants, within the Indian diaspora, negotiate their place in their country of residence, using their country of origin as a point of reference. Through the example of different communities of people of Indian origin who settled in Mauritius, this article explores the combined influence of the country of origin and the country of residence on the mobilisation and the production of indianness in the diaspora. It also sheds light on the role of Indian migrants in the redefinition of their identity, both locally and globally.
