Paśupati’s holy field and the temple priests’ authority in Deopatan (Nepal)

The article deals with the concept of the Paśupatikṣetra basically expressed through three ritually or spatially discernable boundaries: (a), the temple priests and their assistants as well as their different places of origin, (b). the boundaries of the settlement and its place names, (c). ritual processions in the vicinity of the Paśupatinātha temple organized by different groups of ritual specialists. In comparing these boundaries it becomes evident that, in Deopatan, the temple priests’ authority is both extended and limited by their own concept of the sacred arena and the stabilitas loci of deities. The priests’ dilemma is that the more they are involved in the settlement’s structure and population, the less is their authority which neither needs a clearly defined and demarcated territory nor, ultimately, even society.

Cet article est consacré au concept de Paśupatikṣetra tel qu’il s’exprime fondamentalement dans le cadre de trois démarcations rituelles ou inscrites dans l’espace : (a), les prêtres du temple et leurs assistants ainsi que leurs différents lieux d’origine, (b). les limites de la localité et sa toponymie, (c). les processions rituelles au voisinage du temple de Paśupatinātha et leur organisation par différents groupes de spécialistes. Si l’on compare les champs ainsi démarqués, on voit clairement que, à Deopatan, l’autorité des prêtres du temple est à la fois confortée et limitée par leur propre conception de l’arena et de la stabilitas loci des divinités. Le dilemme des prêtres est que, plus ils s’impliquent dans la structure et la population de la localité, moins leur autorité est reconnue, autorité qui n’a besoin ni d’un territoire défini et circonscrit, ni même, en dernière instance, de la société.
