Une tradition orale face au post-modernisme

Historiens et généalogistes, les bardes du Saurashtra ont joué un rôle important dans la littérature orale de cette région. Si les cours, scènes privilégiées de leurs performances, ont disparu, les contes de la Déesse, autre spécialité des bardes, ont accru leur popularité. En outre, les mouvements politiques liés au renouveau de l’hindouisme ont permis de réaffirmer cette tendance. Ces changements ont contribué à remplacer en grande partie les bardes itinérants par des agents de transmission modernes : chanteurs professionnels, auteurs de livres « colporteurs », sans oublier l’importance des studios d’enregistrement. Même si cette tradition est en train de perdre son caractère oral, elle ne se confond pas avec les traditions panindiennes. En effet, l’ancienne tradition des bardes devient le symbole de la particularité culturelle et religieuse de la région.

In Saurashtra, as in Rajasthan, the Charan and Barot castes were the genealogists, bards and « mythographers » of the dominant Rajputs. At the same time, they formed a link to the Goddess, the Charan being known as her « children ». Impersonal fate, prominent in bardic poetry, is contrasted with the love of a personal deity implicit in Bhakti tradition which rose with modernity and a certain turn towards individualism. In the post-independence period, with the disappearance of the princely States, the bardic tradition declined in importance. But recently, there has been a renaissance, and recordings of traditional ballads sell well. This turn towards folklore and the revival of regional tradition goes along with the rise of Hindu fundamentalism in opposing the modernity of the Congress’s influence. The bardic tradition and the cuit of the Goddess thus contribute to « post-modem » trends in the region.
