L’observation des formes spécifiques que revêt aujourd’hui le culte des saints catholiques au Kerala nous a incitée à nous interroger sur les conditions de son émergence. Nous avons ainsi comparé ce culte, d’une part, au culte des saints en Europe et, d’autre part, au culte des divinités dans l’hindouisme. Des différences, mais surtout une certaine homologie des formes cultuelles ont ainsi été mises à jour. Ce jeu entre similitudes et divergences nous a permis d’expliquer l’absence de saints d’origine malayalie, les caractéristiques du pouvoir thaumaturge, la forme des processions ou encore les types de vœu. L’hypothèse qui sous-tend ce travail stipule en effet que l’acculturation du christianisme dans la culture kéralaise s’effectue principalement par la quête des plus proches équivalents des valeurs et des rites que vise à traduire le christianisme. Cette recherche est un processus adaptatif continu qui ne va pas sans de nombreuses équivoques. Celles-ci permettent de préserver l’orthodoxie catholique tout en laissant le croyant exprimer sa foi dans des formes qu’il reconnaît.
