Les amphores des fouilles anciennes du Mont‑Beuvray représentent un matériel qui exerce un attrait puissant. D’une part, en raison de l’importance de Bibracte, l’un des plus grands oppida de la Gaule Chevelue, bien connu des lecteurs de César ; d’autre part, du fait des fouilles qui ont été conduites avec une grande persévérance pendant quatre ans, entre 1867 et 1907. La collection exceptionnellement riche d’amphores timbrées, 195 estampilles, n’avait reçu à l’époque qu’une publication partielle et sommaire. Une vision globale et renouvelée d’un tel matériel s’imposait pour en tirer tous les enseignements et établir une documentation de référence.

The amphorae found in the first excavations of Mont‑Beuvray form an extremely attractive collection of artefacts. This is due not only to the importance of Bibracte, one of the greatest oppida of independent Gaul and well‑known to students of Caesar, but also to the fact that excavations were carried out with great persistence over forty years from 1867 to 1907. The exceptionally rich collection of stamped amphorae, 195 stamps in all, was only given partial and summary publication at the time. A renewed and thorough examination appeared essential in order to collect all the information and establish reference documents for such an important body of material.

Die Amphoren aus den alten Ausgrabungen in Mont‑Beuvray sind von einem besonderen Reiz. Zum einen im Hinblick auf die Bedeutung von Bibracte, eines der größten oppida der Gallia Comata, das den Lesern Caesars gut bekannt ist. Zum anderen wegen der Grabungen, die vierzig Jahre lang, zwischen 1867 und 1907, mit großer Beharrlichkeit geführt wurden. Die außerordentlich reiche Sammlung der mit einer Marke versehenen Amphoren, von denen 195 einen Stempel tragen, wurde in jener Zeit nur partiell und summarisch publiziert. Die umfassende und erneute Betrachtung dieses Materials drängte sich auf, um alle Informationen zu erhalten und die Dokumentation in der Art eines Nachschlagewerkes vorzulegen.
