La région lunelloise offre un cadre propice à une analyse diachronique de l’occupation du sol au cours du premier millénaire. Fouilles, prospections, études de textes, carto‑ et photo‑interprétation, analyses pédologiques et environnementales sont menées en étroite liaison. Dans cette zone littorale, l’agglomération antique de Lunel‑Viel, qui donnera naissance à un village médiéval, constitue un cas exemplaire pour l’étude d’un habitat groupé, sa genèse, son influence sur la hiérarchie du peuplement et la maîtrise du sol. Cette recherche révèle l’ancienneté et la vigueur d’une communauté rurale, qui relégua au second plan le mode d’exploitation domanial fondé sur la villa. L’accent est mis par ailleurs sur l’appropriation par l’homme de son environnement, exploité par une intense activité de défrichement, de drainage et d’amendement.

The Lunel area présents a setting that lends itself to a diachronie analysis of ground occupation during the first millennium. Excavations, surveys, text studies, map‑ and photo‑interpretation, pedological and environmental analyses are carried out in close connection. In this Coastal zone, the antique centre of Lunel‑Viel, which was to give birth to a médiéval village, is an exemplary case for the study of a grouped habitat, its genesis, its influence on the hierarchy of settlement and command of land. This research reveals the oldness and strength of a rural community, which conslgned into the background the domanial mode of exploitation based on the villa. Besides, stress is laid on man’s appropriation of his environment, which was intensively developed through clearing, drainage and improvement.
