Le théâtre d’Argentomagus, agglomération secondaire de la cité des Bituriges Cubes, appartient à la série des édifices qu’A. Grenier désignait sous le nom de théâtres‑amphithéâtres et que l’on appelle désormais théâtres de type gallo‑romain. Depuis la parution, en 1958, du tome du Manuel d’archéologie gallo‑romaine consacré aux édifices de spectacle, la problématique s’est considérablement renouvelée et il est apparu que seule la fouille stratigraphique pouvait répondre aux nombreux problèmes en suspens. Aussi la proposition de reprendre, en 1981, la fouille du théâtre dans la double perspective d’une publication scientifique et d’une mise en valeur de l’édifice a‑t‑elle rencontré un avis très favorable. C’est avec l’idée de retracer les divers moments de l’histoire du monument, mais aussi de saisir certains aspects de la romanisation dans une petite ville du Centre de la Gaule, que le programme de fouilles a été mené.

The theatre at Argentomagus, a small locality within the city of Bituriges Cubi, belongs to the series of edifices that A. Grenier called amphitheatre‑theatres, and which are now known as Gallo‑Roman theatres. The issues broached in the study of theatre buildings have changed considerably since the publication in 1958 of the volume of the Manuel d’Archeologie gallo‑romaine devoted to these edifices, and clearly only a stratigraphic excavation could address the many questions that remained unanswered. The proposal formulated in 1981, suggesting excavation of the theatre with the double purpose of publishing a scientific report and renovating the building, was therefore very well received. The excavation program was conducted with the idea of retracing various moments in the history of the monument, and in an attempt to grasp certain aspects of the romanisation of a small town in central Gaul.

Das Theater von Argentomagus, einer zweitrangigen Siedlung der Civitas der Bituriges Cubi gehört zu den Gebäuden, die A. Grenier als Theater‑Amphitheater bezeichnete, und die von nun an Theater des gallo‑römischen Typus genannt werden. Seit dem Erscheinen des Handbuches der gallo‑römischen Archäologie Manuel d’archeologie gallo‑romaine 1958, das den Zirkus‑ und Theaterbauten gewidmet war, hat sich die Problematik beträchtlich weiterentwickelt, und es ist klar geworden, daß die neu aufgeworfenen Fragen allein anhand stratigraphischer Grabungen beantwortet werden könnten. So hat der Vorschlag im Jahre 1981, die Ausgrabungen des Theaters mit der doppelten Perspektive einer wissenschaftlichen Veröffentlichung und einer Instandsetzung wiederaufzunehmen, großen Anklang gefunden. Die Grabungen sind mit der Absicht durchgeführt worden, die unterschiedlichen Phasen der Geschichte des Gebäudes nachzuvollziehen, aber auch einige Aspekte der Romanisierung in einer kleinen Stadt Zentralgalliens zu erfassen.
