Chapitre 3. Les ex-voto : thèmes et types

La plupart des ex-voto sont des sculptures anthropomorphes : – personnages entiers habillés, debout sur un socle (exception faite d’un cavalier, de deux femmes assises, et de trois emmaillotés), ou statuettes rudimentaires sans indication de vêtement ; – bustes et têtes, avec souvent l’amorce des épaules et parfois l’indication de l’encolure, ainsi que trois exemplaires de têtes superposées ; – parties inférieures de corps comprenant le bassin et les jambes, généralement posées sur un socle ; – bras, mains, jambes et pieds découpés en silhouettes ou sculptés en ronde bosse ; – représentations d’organes internes et externes (planches anatomiques, seins, yeux). Une petite série s’apparentant au règne animal comprend une quinzaine d’objets : chevaux, jambes de chevaux, et patte de bovidé. Près d’un millier de fines plaquettes rectangulaires, vraisemblablement peintes ou inscrites à l’origine, complètent le dépôt. Tous ces thèmes sont connus aussi bien dans le monde gréco-romain qu’à l’époque moderne. Les rapprochements effectués montrent qu’à Chamalières l’éventail de thèmes était très large, et qu’il y avait un fort pourcentage d’ex-voto de guérison –de jambes notamment–, et de plaquettes. Les types varient surtout en fonction de l’essence utilisée, ce que confirme l’étude technique et stylistique.

The majority of the ex-voto are anthropomorphic sculptures: – complete people, clothed and standing on a base (with the exception of one horseman, two seated women and three bound figures), or rudimentary statues with no indication of clothing; – busts and heads which often have the beginning of the shoulders indicated or sometimes a suggestion of the neck, and three examples of superimposed heads; – lower parts of bodies including the pelvis and legs, generally standing on a base; – arms, hands, legs and feet cut out in silhouette or carved in Ronde Bosse; – representations of internal and external organs (anatomical drawings, breasts, eyes). A small group of fifteen objects pertaining to the animal kingdom: horses, horses’ legs, cows’ feet. The deposit also includes more than a thousand thin rectangular tablets which were probably originally painted or inscribed. All of these subjects are known from the Greco-Roman period as well as from modern times. Comparison with other sites shows that the Chamalieres material covers a wide range of subjects with a high percentage of healing ex-voto -legs in particular- and tablets. Types vary primarily as a result of the species of wood used, as is demonstrated by technical and stylistic analysis.

Die meisten Weihgaben sind Holzschnitzarbeiten mit anthropomorphen Formen: – Ganze bekleidete Personen, auf einem Sockel stehend (mit Ausnahme eines Reiters, zweier sitzender Frauen, und drei eingewickelter Personen), oder rudimentäre Statuetten ohne angedeutete Kleidung; – Büsten und Köpfe, oft mit Schulteranfang und manchmal mit Andeutung des Halses, sowie drei Exemplare von übereinandergesetzten Köpfen; – Körperunterteile mit Becken und Beinen, im Allgemeinen auf einem Sockel stehend; – Arme, Hände, Beine und Füße als Silhouetten ausgeschnitten oder als Rundplastiken; – Darstellungen von inneren Organen und Körperteilen (anatomische Tafeln, Busen, Augen). Eine kleine Serie umfasst 15 Gegenstände aus der Tierwelt: Pferde, Pferdebeine und Rinderfüße. An die tausend dünne, rechteckige Täfelchen, die wohl bemalt oder beschriftet waren ergänzen das Depot. Alle diese Themen sind ebenso in griechisch-römischer Zeit wie in moderner Zeit geläufig gewesen. Die vorgenommenen Gegenüberstellungen zeigen, dass die Themen in Chamalieres sehr weit gefächert waren, und dass der Anteil von Heilungsex-voto sehr groß war –vor allem von Beinen– und von kleinen Tafeln. Die Typen können vor allem nach den benutzten Holzarten unterschieden werden, was von der technischen und stilistischen Studie bestätigt wird.
