I would like to offer an improvisation on music in Tender Is the Night, in connection with Claude McKay’s Banjo (1929), which I will use as a counterpoint to Fitzgerald’s book. I have chosen to look at the two novels together because they are both largely set on the French Mediterranean during the same historical period, although McKay’s Marseilles is a far cry, from a social point of view, from the luxury hotel at Cap d’Antibes that inspired the opening and closing sequences of Fitzgerald’s ...
