École française d’Athènes et Institut français de Grèce : destins croisés

Les archives de l’École française d’Athènes éclairent l’histoire complexe de deux institutions qui ont marqué, chacune à sa manière, les relations franco-grecques au xxe siècle : l’EFA, établissement scientifique, dédié à la recherche et à la formation, et l’Institut français d’Athènes (devenu Institut français de Grèce en 2010), établissement culturel se consacrant essentiellement à l’enseignement du français et à la diffusion en Grèce de la culture française. Au-delà d’une histoire partagée durant les premières décennies de ce siècle, ces archives mettent en lumière l’évolution de la vocation de chacune de ces deux institutions au fil du temps. L’enseignement du français, par exemple, qui relevait à l’origine des missions de l’École française, devient après 1907 l’apanage de l’Institut supérieur d’études françaises annexé à l’EFA, puis de l’IFA. Une autre des missions de l’EFA, en revanche, l’étude de la Grèce moderne et contemporaine, après avoir été envisagée comme un champ de recherche privilégié pour l’ISEF puis l’IFA, est finalement réinvestie, à partir des années 1990, par l’EFA.

The archives of the French School at Athens (EFA) throw some light on the complex history of two institutions that marked, each in their own way, France-Greece relations in the 20th century: the EFA, a scientific establishment dedicated to research and teaching, and the Institut français d’Athènes (that became the Institut français de Grèce in 2010), a cultural establishment that focuses essentially on teaching French and promoting French culture in Greece. In addition to their shared history in the early 20th century, these archives highlight the changes in the vocations of each institution over time. For example, the teaching of the French language, which was originally one of the missions of the École française, after 1907, was to come under the remit of the Institut supérieur d’études françaises which was an annexe of the EFA, and became later the IFA. However, after plans were elaborated to make the study of modern and contemporary Greece, another of the EFA’s missions, into a field of research specifically for the ISEF and then the IFA, it was eventually transferred back to the EFA in 1990.
