Le grand dépôt « à l’amphore » du palais d’Amathonte, marqueur d’une ère nouvelle ?

La découverte, dans les fouilles récentes du palais d’Amathonte, d’un dépôt de fondation est remarquable à plus d’un titre. Composé d’une amphore remplie des ossements de la patte arrière gauche d’un Bos Taurus de 2 ans, il avait été placé sur le rocher et dans une cavité creusée dans le remblai préparatoire du sol archaïque. Il se distingue donc des autres dépôts de marmites, bien connus au palais d’Amathonte, par l’importance de son contenu et par sa place au cœur des magasins du Palais. Le choix d’un bovin d’environ 2 ans – animal rarement sacrifié et peu consommé, surtout à cet âge – en dit long sur le caractère tout à fait exceptionnel de cette fondation. Ceci pourrait être le témoignage de nouvelles ambitions, à mettre peut-être en parallèle avec le réaménagement du sanctuaire de la déesse, sur l’acropole, à la fin du CA I. Ceci pourrait aller de pair avec une consolidation du royaume et l’affirmation de son identité culturelle, attestées sur l’île à la fin du viie s.

The discovery, in the recent excavations of the Palace of Amathous, of a foundation deposit, is remarkable in more ways than one. Composed of an amphora containing the bones of the left hind hoof of a two-year-old Bos Taurus, it had been placed on the bedrock and into a cavity in the preparation layers of the Archaic floor. It differs from the other well-known “cooking-pot deposits” in the Palace of Amathous in the importance of its content and its location in the heart of the Palace storehouses. The choice of a two-year-old ox – rarely sacrificed and consumed, especially at that age – testifies to the quite exceptional character of this foundation deposit. This could be the demonstration of new ambitions, possibly linked to the redevelopment of the sanctuary of the goddess on the acropolis, at the end of CA I. This would go hand in hand with a consolidation of the kingdom and an affirmation of its cultural identity, documented on the island at the late seventh century.
