Antique cité d’Épire peu connue des sources écrites, Gitana est devenue, grâce aux fouilles, un centre majeur de recherches archéologiques. L’importance de la ville comme siège des Thesprotes et centre névralgique des affaires épirotes se révèle progressivement par les trouvailles spectaculaires qui y sont réalisées. Les monnaies trouvées entre 1986 et 1997 autorisent une étude fine de la circulation monétaire de Gitana et se prêtent à d’intéressantes remarques sur la diffusion dans la région des monnaies péloponnésiennes. Le nombre relativement limité de ces dernières, comparé aux espèces circulant habituellement en Épire, n’en rend que plus évidentes les relations ponctuelles entre les deux régions. On relève aussi, parmi les 3 000 sceaux récupérés qui attestent des échanges épistolaires de Gitana, un document particulièrement intéressant provenant de Dymè, au type d’Athèna, que l’on s’efforce de dater, en tenant compte des sources historiques et par comparaison avec la documentation numismatique livrée par la cité achéenne.
Gitana, an ancient city in Epirus barely known from literary evidence, emerged as a major area of archaeological research rather recently via the excavations conducted there. The importance of the city as capital of the Thesprotians and as principal center for the Epirotan affairs is gradually demonstrated through impressive finds that have come to light. Through the study of the coins excavated during years 1986–1997, a good sample has been assembled for the assessment of the coin circulation at Gitana. Alongside with an overview of the diffusion of coinage in the broader area valuable remarks can be drawn. The rarity of the Peloponnesian coins is examined in comparison to the predominant emissions circulating in Epirus, issuing authorities are highlighted and other bits of information are discussed, tracing virtually unknown contacts between the two regions. Within the aforementioned context, from the particularly significant group of approximately 3 000 clay sealings from the correspondence archive found at Gitana, comes a highly interesting inscribed seal impression issued by the city of Dyme. In combination with the most probable terminus ante quem, an attempt is made to date the iconographic type by seeking comparanda in the coin production of the city in question and beyond.
Τα Γίτανα, αρχαία πόλη της Ηπείρου, ελάχιστα γνωστή από φιλολογικές πηγές, ανεφάνησαν ως καίριος χώρος αρχαιολογικής έρευνας σχετικά πρόσφατα μέσω των διενεργούμενων ανασκαφών. Η σημασία της πόλεως ως έδρας των Θεσπρωτών και κομβικού κέντρου για τα ηπειρωτικά πράγματα αναδεικνύεται σταδιακά από εντυπωσιακά ευρήματα που έχουν έλθει στο φως. Η μελέτη των ανασκαφικών νομισμάτων των ετών 1986-1997 προσφέρει ένα καλό δείγμα για τη διερεύνηση της νομισματικής κυκλοφορίας στα Γίτανα. Σε συνδυασμό με μια συνολικότερη εικόνα της διάχυσης πελοποννησιακών νομισμάτων στην ευρύτερη περιοχή αποκομίζονται αξιόλογες παρατηρήσεις. Εξετάζεται η σπάνις των συγκεκριμένων νομισμάτων σε σύγκριση με κοπές που κατεξοχήν κυκλοφορούν στην Ήπειρο, καταδεικνύονται εκδίδουσες αρχές και ανιχνεύονται αθέατες επαφές μεταξύ των δύο περιφερειών. Επιπλέον, στο σημαντικό σύνολο περίπου 3.000 πήλινων σφραγισμάτων του αρχείου αλληλογραφίας των Γιτάνων εντοπίστηκε ένα εξαιρετικού ενδιαφέροντος ενεπίγραφο σφράγισμα με μορφή Αθηνάς, που προέρχεται από τη Δύμη της Αχαΐας. Σε συνάρτηση με τα ιστορικά δεδομένα, επιχειρείται η χρονολόγηση του σφραγίσματος μέσω αναζήτησης νομισματικών και επιγραφικών παραλλήλων.
