Il corpus delle fonti letterarie – raccolto, ordinato e interpretato filologicamente sin dall’Ottocento – costituisce lo strumento privilegiato sul quale fondiamo la nostra conoscenza della forma, dell’immagine e dei significati di Roma antica. Nell’ultimo trentennio, le prospettive interpretative di questo strumento sono state costantemente amplificate in relazione all’arricchimento delle conoscenze archeologiche e alla crescente complessità degli approcci della ricerca storica. Dalla integrazione delle diverse fonti, la ricerca topografica su Roma antica ha progressivamente virato la sua prospettiva, da “architettura e urbanistica” a “spazio urbano e storia”, fino a “archeologia e storia urbana”. Non senza criticità metodologiche ed ermeneutiche.

The corpus of literary sources – collected, ordered and interpreted philologically since the nineteenth century – is the privileged instrument on which we base our knowledge of the form, the image and the meanings of ancient Rome. Over the last thirty years, the interpretative perspectives of this evidence have been constantly amplified in relation to the enrichment of archaeological knowledge and to the growing complexity of historical research approaches. From the integration of different sources, topographical research on ancient Rome has progressively turned its perspective from “architecture and urban planning” to “urban space and history” and “archaeology and urban history”. Not without methodological and hermeneutical problems.
