Per arricchire il quadro interpretativo ed esplicativo della congiuntura tardo duecentesca e dell’espansione delle lavorazioni tessili lombardo-toscane, in questo saggio si analizzano le metamorfosi della produzione di questo settore avvenute nelle città lombarde tra la fine del Due e l’inizio del Trecento, decenni considerati tradizionalmente di crisi. Il focus è costituito dai momenti di svolta e di cambiamento di tali manifatture – modifiche della produzione e conversioni –, indagati alla luce del ruolo svolto dalle corporazioni di mestiere e dalle Mercanzie. Si presta attenzione, dunque, più che ai fattori di crisi che possano aver determinato cambiamenti nella produzione, al peso dell’elemento politico, incarnato anche dalle corporazioni, nel loro sviluppo e sostegno.

In order to enrich both the interpretative and the explanatory framework of the late twelfth century, when the expansion of Lombard-Tuscan textile industry happened, this essay analyzes the development of that industrial sector in the cities of Lombardy between the twelfth and the beginning of the fourteenth centuries. The aim of the paper is focused upon the turning points and changes suffered by the textile industry, which will be investigated in the light of the role played by the trade corporations and the Mercanzie. Finally, attention will be paid, also, to the political factors which had led to changes and developments in the production of textile goods within decades traditionally considered as a time of crisis.
