It is common knowledge that in the 19th century many European colonial empires acknowledged or even supported the official use of local ‘adat (“customary law”) in their colonies. This was mostly done out of necessity, for it was believed that a direct interference with the local tradition of administering justice would have provoked hostility from the local population and thus constitute a danger for the colonial rule.
