In September 1996, Joyce Blau, Bernard Hourcade and myself convened a conference on the place of the city in Kurdish history and society. With over thirty participants from more than fifteen different countries, including speakers from the former Soviet republics in Transcaucasia and Central Asia, this was an exciting and memorable event.
