At the end of 2002, records showed an estimate of 42 million people with HIV of which almost half of the infections are women (UNAIDS/WHO 2002). Perinatal transmission accounts for over 90 % of infections among infected children (Ranbaxy Science Foundation 2000). It is estimated that 2.4 million HIV -infected women deliver babies each year, resulting in 600,000 new infections worldwide in infants annually i.e. about 1,600 infants acquire HIV infection each day.
