Introduction The Innocenti Declaration on the Protection, Promotion and Support of Breastfeeding (1990), drawn up by WHO and UNICEF, was a significant development in the area of maternal and child health. The declaration recommended that breast milk be the first milk given to the infant, that breastfeeding begin as soon as possible after birth and that exclusive breastfeeding be continued until 6 months, following which it can be continued with supplementation until 2 years.
