This paper looks at the levels of development found in certain new settlements in a peripheral, or frontier region of the humid tropical lowlands of Mexico as part of a process of national development. It suggests that the higher the degree of infrastructural investment, the greater the degree of involvement in the political structure of the region and the nation.
