With regard to the fundamental guarantees laid down in Articles 27 to 34 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, two interpretations seem possible. As argued above, it seems that the drafters distinguished between aliens in the territory of a belligerent State, on the one hand, and the population of an occupied territory, on the other, and that Articles 27 to 34 of the Fourth Geneva Convention were intended to be provisions common to these two situations only.
