Le paysage du catholicisme français s’est aujourd’hui transformé en une nébuleuse fragmentée de toutes parts. Il est à l’image d’une société devenue, selon certains observateurs, un « archipel » résultant d’un mouvement profond d’« américanisation » du monde. Le catholicisme en France n’échapperait pas lui aussi aux sirènes d’une « américanisation » qui s’exprimerait à partir des processus de communautarisme, de « gentrification » et de conservatisme. Un tel volet, aux accents politiques forts, mérite une attention particulière car il s’inscrit dans une perspective d’histoire transnationale du catholicisme.

The landscape of French Catholicism has today been transformed into a nebula fragmented on all sides. It is the image of a society that has become, according to some observers, an « archipelago » resulting from a profound movement of « americanisation » of the world. Catholicism in France would not escape the sirens of an « americanisation » that would be expressed through the processes of communitarianism, « gentrification » and conservatism. Such a section, with strong political overtones, deserves particular attention because it is part of a transnational history of Catholicism.
