The ethnographic focus of this chapter is the “combined fellowship” exchanges that are part of the United Church Women’s Fellowship (UCWF) program of the Vula’a people (conventionally known as the Hula) on the south-eastern coast of Papua New Guinea. I bring the perspective of existential phenomenology to bear on a configuration of issues presently of concern to Melanesian anthropology to argue that contemporary Christian practice is grounded in a pre-Christian ontology.
