Sophie Bouffier, « Évacuer l’eau hors des murailles en Occident grec », Publications du Centre Camille Jullian, ID : 10.4000/books.pccj.3921
This paper intends to study how Western Greeks dealt with sewers and the channelling of wastewater through the fortifications in Greek occidental cities, mainly Sicily, Megalè Hellas and Illyria. It was a major problem because the walls represented a serious obstacle for evacuating wastewaters (mainly during storms) from sites often steep or subject to particular hydrologic conditions. Generally, these drains were conceived according to urban decisions, such as installing waterpipes at the end of main streets or using the city gates to evacuate the waters. The security of the city also determined the type of evacuation through fortification walls at the expense of the technical efficiency of such installations, thus rendering their maintenance difficult.
