The contribution is dedicated to the Etruscan-Samnite site of Pontecagnano, located in the Agro Picentino, about 8 km south of Salerno. Over the last 20 years, research has allowed the reconstruction of the landscape in which the Villanovian site was established at the beginning of the 9th century BC. Probably from the first phase, the necropolises were arranged around the settlement, developing along the road network and in relation to characteristic elements of the landscape, such as orography and watercourses. Their topographical development, passing through phenomena of abandonment and acquisition of new areas, constitutes the main source of information on the phases of structuring and transformation of the site, from the Villanovan and Etruscan phase to the sannitisation and crisis marked by the Roman conquest of southern Campania in the first half of the 3rd century BC. In addition, the interventions of land enhancement and agrarian division dating back to the Etruscan phase and the transformations that occurred with Romanisation are presented.
