Ce chapitre retrace les grandes étapes de la souveraineté égyptienne. L’étude remonte à la période 1841‑1882 parce que celle‑ci est la plus sujette à un débat historiographique. En 1882, avec l’occupation britannique, l’Égypte perd sa souveraineté. Il s’agit alors de rappeler la continuité de l’occupation militaire britannique jusqu’en 1956 et d’analyser les tentatives infructueuses de la Grande‑Bretagne pour transformer l’occupation en une alliance à l’apparence amicale.Cette approche force à prendre pour date charnière non plus celle du coup d’État (le 23 juillet 1952) mais, soit à une échelle méso‑historique et égyptiano‑centrée, l’année 1954 parce qu’à cette date un Traité anglo‑égyptien fut enfin signé ; soit à une échelle macro‑historique et internationale, l’année 1955 parce qu’à cette date la guerre froide se cristallise en trois camps (États-Unis, URSS et neutralisme positif) et que l’Égypte devint un acteur central du troisième. La rédaction et la première publication de La Philosophie de la Révolution se situe chronologiquement dans l’immédiate antichambre de ces deux années charnières.Ce chapitre a enfin pour objectif de mettre en avant le fait essentiel qu’à la période de la rédaction de La Philosophie de la Révolution, l’anticolonialisme est déjà devenu, au moins sur le plan du discours, une valeur consensuelle et c’est en réalité la question sociale qui domine la période.

This chapter traces the great stages of Egyptian sovereignty. The study dates back to the period between 1841 and 1882 because it is the most amenable to a historiographic debate. In 1882, with the British occupation, Egypt lost its sovereignty. In this short history of Egyptian sovereignty, we bring to mind the continuity of the British military occupation until 1956 and Great‑Britain’s unsuccessful attempts to transform the occupation into the semblance of a friendly alliance.This approach forces us to alter the date of the coup (23rd July 1952) as a historical pivotal date. Using meso‑level history and an Egyptian‑centric focus, we find that the pivotal year is 1954 because at that time an Anglo‑Egyptian treaty was finally signed. Using macro‑history and an international focus, we find that the pivotal year is 1955 because at that time the protagonists in the Cold War crystallized into three camps (United States, USSR and the Non‑Aligned Movement). Egypt became a central actor of the third one. It is worth noticing that the writing and the first publication of The Philosophy of the Revolution is chronologically located just before these two pivotal years.Finally, this chapter aims to highlight the essential fact that, at the time of the writing of The Philosophy of the Revolution, anti‑colonialism, at least at a discourse level, has already become a consensual value and in reality, is the social issue which politically dominates the period.

رسم الفصل الأول المراحل الكبيرة للسيادة المصرية. تبدأ الدراسة في الفترة ما بين ١٨٤١ و١٨٨٢ لأن المؤرخين ناقشوا كثيراً طبيعة السيادة المصرية خلال هذه الفترة. وبالعكس عند ما بدأ الاحتلال البريطاني في السنة ١٨٨٢ فقدت مصر سيادتها من غير نقاش. ثم نذكر استمرار الاحتلال العسكري البريطاني حتى عام ١٩٥٦ ونحلل المحاولات البريطانية العقيمة من أجل تحويل الاحتلال إلى تحالف يبدو وديا. أجبر هذا الاقتراب على اعتبار يوم الانقلاب – يوم ٢٣ يوليو ١٩٥٢ – غير مناسب كلحظة حاسمة للتاريخ المصري بل السنة ١٩٥٤ إذا نستخدم المدى المتوسط للتاريخ والذي يركز على البُعد المصري لأن في هذه السنة وقعت مصر وبريطانية معاهدة أو السنة ١٩٥٥ إذا نستخدم المدى البعيد للتاريخ والذي يركز على البُعد الدولي لأن في هذه السنة الحرب الباردة تبلورت في ثلاثة أطراف – الولايات المتحدة والاتحاد السوفيتي ودوّل عدم الانحياز – وقامت مصر بدور مركزي في الطرف الثالث. فمن المثير للاهتمام أنه وفقا لهذا الترتيب الزمني سبق تحرير (فلسفة الثورة) في طبعتها الأولى هاتين السنتين الحاسمتين مباشرةً. أخيراَ يستهدف هذا الفصل إلقاء الضوء على واقعة بارزة : في الفترة التي كُتب فيها (فلسفة الثورة) كان الخطاب المناهض للاستعمار يتوافق مع الآراء وبالعكس كانت المسألة الاجتماعية تقسم الآراء. فعلى المستوى السياسي سيطرت المسألة الاجتماعية على الفترة التي ندرسها.
