Deux histoires officielles furent rédigées à propos de la dynastie des Tang 唐 (618‑907) : la première, intitulée l’Ancienne histoire des Tang (Jiu Tangshu 舊唐書), assez rapidement après la chute des Tang, et la seconde, la Nouvelle histoire des Tang (Xin Tangshu 新唐書), environ un siècle plus tard, sous les Song 宋 (960‑1279), en remplacement de l’autre histoire jugée alors défectueuse. S’ils rapportent peu ou prou les mêmes événements, les deux ouvrages sont cependant si dissemblables, qu’il fut décidé au xviiie siècle de réintégrer le premier au corpus des histoires officielles, le sauvant ainsi d’une disparition quasi certaine.

Two standard histories were written on the Tang dynasty唐 (618‑907): the first one, entitled Old History of the Tang (Jiu Tangshu 舊唐書), rather shortly after the collapse of the Tang, and the second one, the New History of the Tang (Xin Tangshu 新唐書), about a century later, under the Song宋 (960‑1279), replacing the other history, then considered as defective. The two histories indeed refer to the same events generally speaking, but they are so different that it was decided in the 18th century to reinstate the Old History of the Tang Dynasty within the official corpus of the standard histories, saving it from an almost certain disappearance.
