The provincial law codes are the most prominent monument of an early vernacular literacy with Latin script in the emerging kingdom of Sweden. Literacy appeared later and was less varied in what was to become Sweden than in Norway, for example. The Swedish provincial law codes are mostly from the late 13th century and the early 14th century.
